What is Windows?

What is Windows?

Windows is a group of operating systems initially developed by Microsoft and first released on November 20, 1985. With both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, Windows is the world leader in terms of user population. Windows operating systems include both client and server versions. The most well-known Windows client versions from past to present are as follows:

Windows 98
Windows ME
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7, 10, and 11

On the other hand, Windows holds a leading position in its field with server versions. This journey, starting with Windows NT Server, continued with 2000 Server and 2003 Server. The most recent server version currently in use is Windows Server 2016. Source

Windows facilitates individuals’ control over their computers through its operating system created with specialized software. Its fundamental working principle involves accessing documents on the desktop interface and managing this data through hardware devices such as keyboards and mice. Additionally, Microsoft has initiated efforts to eliminate the need for traditional hardware components such as mice and keyboards and enable the management of operating systems through brain power. When this becomes a reality, computer usage will become much easier compared to the past.

Microsoft uses the NT kernel in Windows operating systems, which makes it a UNIX-like system, unlike the UNIX operating system. Its compatibility is derived from two different types of files named ‘psxss.exe’ and ‘psxdll.dll’. Both of these files enable the creation of the POSIX subsystem in the Windows operating system.

The fame that Windows has gained on a global level is primarily due to the conveniences it provides to its users. It allows customization of the interface, file transfers, high optimization, and optimal performance. Moreover, nowadays, almost all kinds of applications, from personal to commercial, are developed to be compatible with the Windows operating system. Considering all these aspects, it is possible to mention the advantages offered by Windows operating systems under a few headings:

Windows provides an efficient working environment thanks to its user-friendly and simple interface.
The compatibility of both old and current programs with Windows eliminates the need for extra hardware.
It can easily integrate new hardware introduced by emerging technologies into its system.
The system’s usability is highly efficient compared to other operating systems.
