What is a proxy?

WHAT IS A PROXY?

A proxy, also known as a proxy server or intermediary server, is a server that acts as an intermediary during an internet connection. It is an auxiliary option used by those who do not want to establish a direct connection. Before delving into the details of what a proxy is, it is beneficial to understand how these intermediary servers work.

The browser connects to the proxy server and then sends commands about which page it wants to access.
If necessary, the proxy connects to the specified page and retrieves its content.
The proxy then directly forwards the content to the browser.

A proxy is an intermediary machine used during internet access. In other words, it acts as a proxy during the connection. It conceals the user’s information and online footprint during the connection, allowing them to browse anonymously. Proxy services are heavily utilized, especially in countries with authoritarian regimes. This is because the internet and social media platforms are often heavily censored and monitored by such governments. With the help of proxies, it becomes more challenging for authorities to reach and identify users.

Advantages of Using a Proxy

Proxy systems are widely preferred worldwide due to the advantages they provide to users. So, what are the advantages of using a proxy? These advantages can be summarized in a few points:

Extra Speed: Proxies, also known as proxy servers, store frequently visited web pages in their cache. This allows for faster access when visiting those pages.
Additional Control: Proxies can restrict access to certain websites. They keep a record of which pages users visit, providing insights into their browsing activities. Proxies also contribute to parental control measures.
Enhanced Security: Proxies have the capability to directly clean infected files that infiltrate the system. They prevent other users on the network from infecting the system with viruses.
Enhanced Privacy: Proxies help circumvent identity access based on IP addresses by authoritarian governments.
Extended Accessibility: Proxies enable direct access to restricted websites. With proxies, users can access any website worldwide.

Proxy servers, also known as proxy, operate on the same basic principle as VPN systems. If you want to learn more about VPN, you can read our article titled ‘What is VPN?’. Their areas of application are quite extensive. Proxy servers are used not only for personal preferences but also in public internet services provided in places such as parks, public institutions, hospitals, and universities, to name a few examples.
